Defination
CAST-PAPER : a three dimensional paper sculpture made when natural fibers are beaten to a bulb in a special bin. The pulp is pressed into a relief mold and dried so the fibers bond into one solid piece.
COLLAGRAPH : an intaglio print produced from an inked plate that has been built up with a collage of any materials the artist finds desirable. The plate is sealed, inked and run through a press against dampened paper to produce the image.
ETCHING : a print produced from a metal plate whose lines are etched into the surface with acid. The lines are inked, then transferred to dampened paper via the heavy pressure of an etching press. An edition of multiple originals results.
INTAGLIO : in printmaking any form of printing in which the image to be transferred to paper is incesed below the surface of the plate. Intaglio prints incllude etchings, drypoints, and mezzotints.
LITHOGRAPH : a print created from a stone or metal plate that has been treated with a greasy substance that accepts ink; the ink is then transferred to a paper though a press. The plate must be redrawon and re-inked for each new color added to the final print. An edition of multiple originals results.
MONOTYPE : a one of a kind print made when paint is applied to a smooth glass or metal plate then covered with a sheet of paper. Pressure transfers the ink t the paper. While similar images can made from the same plate, no two pieces are identical.
OFFSET LITHOGRAPH : a photomechanical process for reproducing art. Original art is photographed with special lenses that separate colors into four distinct negatives. Photosensitive plates are exposed through these negatives; when run through a press, ink is applied to the paper with small sots that merge into the disired color. Since these reproducctions are produced by machines, the artist does not have as much direct involvement in the process as he does traditional printmaking methods.
SERIGRAPH : a print produced fro ink or paint brushed through a mesh of silk and transferred onto paper. Areas that will not be printed with a certain color are blocked out with stencils, masks or a waxy substance worked into the mesh; a fresh stencil is created for each color added. Multiple originals are produced in each edition. GICLEE--A computer-generated continuous tone reproduction made with an iris printer. It may also include hand work by the artist.
MIXED MEDIA PRINT : These prints can be either original or reproduction such as a serilith which uses both lithography and serigraphy and hand drawn separations. an imprint that employs four color process lithography with hand produced separations.
LIMITED EDITION PRINT : A print from a predetermined number of impressions made from a plate after which no more impressions are to be taken. It is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist and usually printed on better paper.
ARTIST PROOF : These are traditionally the property of the artist and usually limited the first ten percent of the edition.
CANVAS TRANSFER : A reproduction that has been adhered to canvas instead of paper.
DECKLE : The natural rough edge on a sheeot of paper.
EDITION : The copies in an edition that are signed and numbered.
EMBOSSED PRINT : A process using an intaglio press to raise an image on a paper surface producing three dimensional effect.
HORS DE COMMERCE : These prints are used by sales people to show to potential clients. They usually are not signed and are concealing minor flaws or a stamp indicating, not for sale.
PRESENTATION PRINT : prints outside the edition that are generally dedicated to an individual as a gift.
RAG PAPER(MAT) : Paper made of 100% cotton fibers and no wood pulp. This ensures that the paper will not deteriorate like paper containing wood fiber.
REMARQUE : A small drawing, painting, or sketch added to the border or image of a print. It increases the value of the print because only a few prints are remarqued.
